- "The humanities as a way of relating to individuals, to people, and making a difference in their lives, so that they could then be fuller, more complete human beings, as we talked about the humanities."
- Story
-
The most pivotal time of my service on the UH board was going down to southern Utah, and meeting with the native people. Finding out a bit about their history, and their heritage, their culture, their humanities, and learning from them about them, as a group of people, stuff that we did not otherwise know. Or we assumed that we knew, but we didn’t have it quite right. It was a part of a Utah Humanities board meeting, as well as a project that was being done by the high school and the Native Americans who lived in southern Utah: Montezuma.
Also, Without the humanities, we would not be nearly the broad-based community. We wouldn’t include people, because of their numbers, we wouldn’t include them in many ways. African Americans, for example, are two percent of the state’s population, and so they would be left out without the Humanities. But with the humanities, we have been able to include people of small groups, as well as people of larger organizations. - Date
